Animal

Vegetarians, be on your way. As the name suggests, Animal is all about meat, especially the parts often ignored. While this is the first place I was introduced to the amazing oral pleasure that is pork belly, perfectly cooked, over a year ago, Animal has since remained a staple of Los Angeles food and I was able to introduce it to my parents a couple weeks ago.

There’s your usual foie gras (but seared in balsamic vinegar and paired with strawberry jam) or short ribs, but also delicious (really!) garlic and parsley bone marrow, pig’s ear (made in thin crispy slices), sweetbreads, duck hearts, etc. The food is really amazing, but even better: it changes regularly (by which I mean: menus are printed daily and change based on what happens to be available that day).

The plates range from small to normal entrée-sized, but I highly recommend ordering a lot of the smaller plates and sharing with the whole table (you can always order more of the same if you loved it and feel you didn’t get enough). The wine comes by the glass or (really reasonably!) priced bottles, but also in convenient carafes (that are perfect for couples).

I’ll leave you with the must-order desert staple: bacon-covered chocolate. Rich cocoa, salty bacon bits, in an unusual yet delectable combination, much like every one of the dishes Animal serves.
